Top 10 New Gold Discoveries in Western Australia (2020–2026)

Western Australia keeps proving there’s still gold left to find. Between 2020 and 2026, explorers and miners across the state made a string of standout finds from a multi-million-ounce discovery in the remote Pilbara to fresh high-grade veins inside century-old mines near Kalgoorlie. Here are ten of the biggest new gold discoveries in Western Australia from this period, and why each one matters.

Top 10 New Gold Discoveries in Western Australia

1. Hemi, Mallina Gold Project (Pilbara)

De Grey Mining discovered Hemi in late 2019, uncovering a style of gold mineralisation never before seen in the Pilbara. Drilling grew the deposit to 11.2 million ounces, making it Australia’s largest undeveloped gold discovery in decades. Northern Star Resources completed its takeover of De Grey in May 2025 to secure the project.

2. Never Never, Dalgaranga Gold Project (Murchison)

Spartan Resources found this high-grade deposit in 2022, just a kilometre from Dalgaranga’s existing processing plant near Mount Magnet. Never Never grew to close to 1.5 million ounces at over 8 grams per tonne gold, among the richest grades found in WA this decade. Ramelius Resources bought Spartan for A$2.4 billion in 2025.

3. Bellevue Gold Mine (Goldfields)

A 2017 discovery hole at this long-dormant site near Leinster kicked off years of drilling that defined one of Australia’s highest-grade gold resources, at close to 10 grams per tonne. Bellevue poured its first gold in October 2023, reopening a mine that had sat idle for more than 20 years.

4. Side Well and Mulga Bill (Murchison)

Great Boulder Resources built a genuine new discovery near Meekatharra from overlooked ground and fresh drilling under shallow cover. The Mulga Bill deposit anchored a resource that passed 1 million ounces by December 2025, with several nearby targets still being tested.

5. Gonneville, Julimar Project (Wheatbelt)

Chalice Mining’s very first drill hole at Julimar, in March 2020, hit a huge palladium-platinum-nickel-copper system just 70km from Perth the largest platinum group metals discovery in Australian history. Its resource includes 17 million ounces of combined palladium, platinum and gold.

6. Karlawinda and Mt Gibson (Pilbara and Murchison)

Capricorn Metals brought its Karlawinda gold mine into production in June 2021 and acquired the historic Mt Gibson project a month later. Continued drilling across both sites has lifted the company’s combined gold reserves to 5.24 million ounces.

7. Starlight and White Light Lodes, Break of Day (Murchison)

Musgrave Minerals discovered these high-grade gold lodes in 2020, extending the Break of Day trend near Cue with shallow, high-grade ore. Ramelius Resources acquired the project in 2023 and is now developing it into a new production hub.

8. Vivien and Comet Vale (Eastern Goldfields)

Gorilla Gold Mines reported a run of new high-grade gold intercepts through 2025 and into 2026 at its North Kalgoorlie projects, including fresh discoveries at Comet Vale and extensions at Vivien, growing a resource in an area with existing mining infrastructure.

9. Gwalia Uppers (Leonora)

In 2026, Genesis Minerals uncovered extensive high-grade gold in upper sections of the historic Gwalia mine that had barely been touched since the 1960s, with drill hits as rich as 43 grams per tonne proof that WA’s oldest mines can still hide new gold.

10. Beta Hunt Coarse Gold Finds (Kambalda)

Following the famous 2018 “Father’s Day Vein,” Karora Resources kept unearthing new pockets of spectacular coarse gold nearby through 2020 and 2022, reinforcing Kambalda’s reputation as one of WA’s richest gold-nickel camps. Westgold Resources now runs the mine after merging with Karora in 2024.

FAQs

What is the biggest gold mine in Western Australia?

Newmont’s Boddington gold mine, about 130km southeast of Perth, is Australia’s largest gold-producing mine and one of the biggest in the world. It isn’t a new discovery production restarted in 2009 but it remains the benchmark for Western Australia’s gold mining industry, producing around 700,000 ounces of gold a year.

Why does Western Australia keep finding new gold?

Much of the state sits on ancient greenstone belts and craton rock that are naturally rich in gold. Better drilling technology, deeper exploration, and strong gold prices have all encouraged explorers to test ground that earlier generations of miners overlooked.

Which part of WA has produced the most new gold discoveries?

The Murchison and Eastern Goldfields regions have produced the most recent finds, though the single largest discovery of the period, Hemi, came from the Pilbara — a region not traditionally known for large gold deposits.
